Kali Gandaki, Nepal - Asia |
The Kali Gandaki or simply the Gandaki River is a major river in Nepal. This river is a tributary of the Ganges River. What is highly notable about this river is the deep gorge that it flows through. Also, due to this river there is a major hydroelectric plant working in Nepal and at the Indo-Nepal border at Valmikinagar.
The gorge through which the river flows is called as the Kali Gandaki Gorge, or Andha Galchi, between the mountains Dhaulagiri (8167 m) to the west and Annapurna (8091 m) to the east. This river is older than the Himalayas itself and has been able to cut through the uplift of mountains due to obtain its level.
There are 1025 glaciers and 338 lakes that are reported to be present in the Gandaki River basin. Also, there are many important towns and cities that are located on the banks of the Gandaki River like Lo Manthang, Jomsom, Beni, Baglung, Kusma, Ridi, Devghat, Narayangarh, Valmikinagar and Triveni. This river also has cultural and traditional importance attached to it and there is mention of this river in the great Hindu epic called Mahabharata. |
