Galapagos Islands |
|
Galápagos Islands, Archipiélago de Colón, Islas de Colón, Islas Galápagos is referred to an archipelago of volcanic islands, some of which are still active, with sporadic explosions and seismic movements. The islands of the archipelago are scattered around the Equator. To be precise this archipelago is situated 972 kilometres or 525 nautical miles west of continental Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.
With around 40,000 inhabitants, the Galapagos Archipelago is a province of Ecuador, a country lying northwest to South America. In addition to this, all these islands form the part of Ecuador's National Park System. Spanish is the main language spoken on these islands.
The Galapagos Archipelago is famed for its huge amount of endemic species besides the studies undertaken by Charles Darwin in the expedition of the Beagle that facilitated the initiation of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. |
