The railroad that was built between Omaha and Sacramento in the United States was the first one which was transcontinental and has been included in the list of Seven Wonders of the Industrial World. This railroad was built in 1869 and linked the railway network of the Eastern United States with California on the Pacific Coast.
This railroad was one of the crowning achievements that are credited to President Abraham Lincoln even though it was completed four years after his death. High mountains and plateaus existed in the route and it was a great feat to overcome these problems with excellent engineering skills and labour efforts that accomplished the task.
The construction of this railroad which connects the eastern and western halves of the United States has been considered to be one of the greatest technological feats done by the nation. This railroad served as a very vital link for the development of the “Wild West” and for trade, commerce, and travel between the two halves.
Also, with the construction of this railroad the end of the stagecoaches and wagon trains came nearer. Two privately chartered companies, the Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad were responsible for building the railroad. The former built it from west to east and the latter worked for building it east to west. |
