Bagan Temples & Pagodas |
|
Bagan was titles Arimaddanapura and Tambadipa was the capital of various ancient kingdoms of Myanmar. This religious site is widely famous for its expanse of sacred geography. It is situated in the dry central plains, eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Its ruins encompass an area of 16 square miles. It became a major city in 874 AD. Bagan Buddhist Temples & Pagodas include various well known temples like Ananda Temple, Gawdawpalin, Dhammayangyi, Shwesandaw, Mahabodhi and Shwezigon.
As per Burmese tradition, the capital of Bagan shifted with every reign. Bagan is an extraordinary place to visit due to its stunning view. It came in its golden age with the conquest of Thaton by king Anawrahta in 1057 AD. From this time to Kublai Khan’s forces in 1287 AD, almost 13000 temples, pagodas and very many other sacred structures were constructed. Till date, after seven centuries later 2.220 temples are there. One-third of the city space is washed by the river Irrawaddy, hundreds of others are turned in to crumbled stones and many of the temples are torn by thieves in pursuit of treasure. It is an amazing place to visit. |
